Choose the connection at the exact house, not the postcode
One road can have fibre while the next village street does not. Ask local fixed broadband providers for an address-level installation survey and a written quote. Distinguish fibre to the home from fixed wireless, mobile router packages and legacy copper. Confirm upload speeds, latency, fair usage, contract term, installation delays, power requirements and support arrangements.
Mobile and fixed availability maps are useful starting points but usually describe predicted outdoor signal, not guaranteed indoor speed or availability during a storm. Map results cannot confirm an individual building's thick-stone walls, terrain shadow, network congestion or mast backhaul.
Official operator maps include A1's detailed coverage map ↗ and Vivacom's interactive coverage map ↗, both displaying coverage updated in October 2026. Ask other available operators for their most recent written address check.
Two genuinely independent connections beat one fast connection
| Situation | Practical check |
|---|---|
| Primary line | A fixed broadband installation with a measured speed and service-level expectation appropriate to the household. |
| Secondary connection | A Bulgarian mobile SIM or separate fixed wireless service; preferably a different physical access network or mobile carrier to reduce shared-outage risk. |
| Power resilience | A correctly sized UPS for the fibre terminal/router and any necessary indoor antenna equipment. Test real runtime, battery safety and whether the provider's street cabinet still has power. |
| Automatic failover | A dual-WAN router can switch to backup data automatically; verify that the application session, VPN and live calls recover acceptably. |
| Dead-spot coverage | Test at multiple rooms, garden and access road, both day and evening, and during busy periods; try more than one carrier before signing a contract. |
| Critical communications | Keep charged phones, alternative emergency call options and offline addresses/maps. No broadband service should be the only method of contacting help. |
For a working-from-home property, run tests during an actual visit using the devices and applications you intend to use; avoid choosing it purely from advertised 5G speed.
Keep a UK number without depending on permanent roaming
Since Brexit, UK mobile networks are not all obliged to provide free EU roaming; prices and fair-use thresholds differ by provider. Ofcom's latest consumer guidance (July 2026) says to check charges, limits and roaming notifications with the network. A UK SIM used indefinitely in Bulgaria may be subject to fair-use and contractual restrictions.
For long-term residence, consider a local Bulgarian SIM/eSIM for data and routine calls, while retaining a UK number where contract terms allow for identity verification and UK contacts. Check SMS receipt abroad, short-code messages, roaming credit, top-up and number inactivity before relying on it for banking.
Use the international dialling code +359 for Bulgarian numbers (omit the leading domestic trunk zero when appropriate). Record any UK bank service number in full international format and confirm it accepts calls from outside Britain.
Banking apps, authentication and UK accounts
- Ask every UK bank, card issuer and investment provider whether it permits your actual Bulgarian residential and tax status, and update your address truthfully.
- Check its iOS/Android app works on the devices and operating-system versions you will keep, including after an app-store country change.
- Before leaving, test login with mobile data and home broadband, including push approval, SMS codes, telephone security and recovery procedures.
- Set up a permitted fallback authentication method (for example a second trusted device or bank-supported hardware security key), but never share recovery codes with an untrusted keyholder.
- Keep backup access to funds in a separately supported account; don't rely on a single UK card if a fraud lock or phone failure occurs.
- Ask how the bank sends replacement cards, paper security letters and statements internationally, and whether it uses a mandatory real residential address.
A UK correspondence address or paid mail forwarding service does not make someone UK-resident. Some financial firms restrict accounts after an overseas move and may close or limit services, depending on product and regulatory authorisation. Check the provider, do not infer a blanket UK banking ban.
UK TV, streaming and subscription services
| Situation | Practical check |
|---|---|
| BBC iPlayer | The BBC says iPlayer is available for use in the UK only. A UK TV licence is not a licence to stream it from Bulgaria. International BBC.com offerings are separate products. |
| UK-billed Netflix or other streaming subscriptions | Catalogues, subscription pricing, account country and rights can differ. Netflix states that permanent moves to another country require an account transition; don't assume a UK library travels with you indefinitely. |
| Other UK broadcaster players | Check each service's official geographic availability and terms. No general legal right to access every UK-only on-demand app from Bulgaria. |
| BBC radio and podcasts | International BBC audio availability differs from the old UK BBC Sounds service. Check BBC.com or current BBC international products; do not promise universal access to every programme. |
| VPNs and technical workarounds | A VPN cannot grant a content licence or override provider terms. Avoid advising readers to misrepresent location or circumvent access controls. |

Post forwarding, parcels and legitimate addresses
Royal Mail says it can redirect letters from a UK address to an overseas address, but international redirection excludes items that are over 25 mm thick, weigh more than 100 g or appear to contain goods. Signed-for, Special Delivery and tracked redirection have different restrictions. Apply in advance and check validity and costs with Royal Mail.

A UK mail-scanning service may be convenient for correspondence but may not be acceptable as a real residential address for HMRC, banks, insurers or Bulgarian residence registration. Postal redirection is also not a universal solution for original identity documents or registered mail.
For a Bulgarian registered address, ask the relevant municipal/civil registration authority and Migration Directorate about the documents, lawful use and owner consent needed for your citizenship and residence permit type. The Bulgarian e-government address service ↗ distinguishes permanent and current addresses and lists proof of occupancy/owner consent as appropriate; eligibility and procedure can differ for foreigners.
Before committing to a village: seven digital tests
- Check at least two network operators using current maps, and perform an indoor mobile-speed/voice test on a real visit.
- Get fixed broadband written installation feasibility and pricing for the actual address, not the village name alone.
- Test UK banking authentication and support routes using the phone, app country and recovery method you expect to retain.
- Set up an independent backup data route plus safe router/ONT power backup; test failover instead of merely buying hardware.
- Review roaming, SMS inactivity, UK number retention and Bulgarian SIM/eSIM contract terms.
- Review all TV, music and subscription country/geo-licensing rules before cancelling or migrating memberships.
- Update banks, tax authorities, pensions, DVLA and other important bodies with truthful contact details; establish secure legal post receipt, not just letter redirection.
