Getting healthcare sorted.
Separate eligibility, registration and actual treatment.
Research the next steps ↓Start with the right question.
Moving from the UK does not automatically make you eligible for Bulgarian publicly funded treatment. Establish your legal basis for healthcare first, then confirm the registration process and the medical services available near your chosen address.
Official sources are starting points for researching your circumstances, not confirmation that a specific service is available or that an individual application will succeed.
Check current requirements before travelling, making financial commitments or submitting documents.
Initial editorial review: 15 October 2026 · Individual eligibility and current timetables require confirmation.
What to establish.
Check your legal basis
Contact NHS Overseas Healthcare Services where an S1 could apply, or NHIF and the relevant Bulgarian authorities where you expect to register through residence or employment. A GHIC is not a substitute for resident coverage.
Check the paperwork
Ask the competent Bulgarian office for its current document list, translation rules, submission arrangements and evidence that registration is complete.
Find actual care
NHIF registration does not establish that a local GP or specialist is accepting patients. Contact individual practices and ask whether the necessary treatment, language and access arrangements are available.
Plan for any gap
Review continuity of prescriptions and suitable insurance or alternative arrangements before your move. Obtain medical advice on essential medication; this guide is not medical advice.
Check the original authority.
These sites may revise their processes and notices. The responsibility for verifying an individual journey or eligibility remains with the relevant authority or operator.
