Before you move / Legal status

Can you actually move to Bulgaria?

A beautiful village is not a residence permit. Start by working out which rules apply to you, and take the official route from there.

The short answer

For most British citizens arriving after Brexit, a visa-free visit is not permission to settle indefinitely or take up work. Bulgaria is in the Schengen area. Check your proposed length of stay, whether you already have Withdrawal Agreement residence rights, and the specific Bulgarian visa or permit pathway you need.

This is general information, not individual immigration, tax, legal, healthcare or financial advice. Rules and personal entitlements can differ. Verify current requirements directly with the responsible authority before acting.

01 / Practical guidance

Visiting and living are different

Use the European Commission’s official Schengen short-stay calculator ↗ to check the rolling 90 days in 180 days, including travel in other Schengen countries. It is a planning aid, not a residence permit or a guarantee of admission.

A visa-free short stay for a British citizen is generally limited to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the Schengen area as a whole. Days previously spent in other Schengen countries can count towards this allowance; simply crossing from one Schengen country into Bulgaria does not reset it.

Short visits may cover tourism and certain non-work activities, but they do not confer a general right to work or permanently reside in Bulgaria. Check passport and entry requirements at the time you book your trip, not just when you first start researching.

  • Note previous Schengen travel days before making a long exploratory trip.
  • Keep travel and accommodation evidence to hand.
  • Do not confuse a second-home visit with establishing Bulgarian residence.
Current entry checks / October 2026

Check your passport and the Entry/Exit System.

For an ordinary visa-free Schengen visit using a full British citizen passport, GOV.UK states that the passport must have been issued less than 10 years before your arrival date and must expire at least three months after your intended departure from the Schengen area. Having unused passport validity does not override the rolling 90 days in 180 days limit. Different documents and exemptions can apply to qualifying residents.

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) records the entry and departure of relevant short-stay travellers digitally. You may need to provide a facial image and fingerprints at the external border, and first-time registration can make border processing slower. GOV.UK says certain long-term residents are exempt; check the official exemption list and carry the relevant residence evidence if you rely on an exemption. EES does not itself grant a visa or extend your permitted stay.

Long-term residence needs its own basis

Bulgarian visa and residence categories depend on why you want to stay. Employment, retirement, study and family circumstances can lead to different procedures, with different evidence and deadlines. A Type D visa may form part of a longer-stay route, but it is not a universal answer or a guarantee of a residence permit.

Check directly with the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Migration Directorate. Ask precisely what application must be made before leaving Britain, whether the proposed activity is permitted, and which documents must be translated, legalised or presented as originals.

  1. State your nationality, current residence rights and intended purpose when asking the authority about the correct route.
  2. Read the appropriate visa conditions, permitted activities and length of stay in full.
  3. Confirm the required health cover, accommodation evidence and the permitted application location before paying fees.
  4. Keep documentary proof of the application and all decisions.
03 / Practical guidance

If you already lived there before 2021

British nationals lawfully resident in Bulgaria before 1 January 2021 can have rights protected by the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement. Their position should not be described using the same rules as that of a new British arrival.

GOV.UK explains residence card evidence and the European Entry/Exit System. If you believe you are protected but do not hold the correct residence document, seek guidance from the Bulgarian Migration Directorate promptly rather than assuming old papers will be sufficient at the border.

Partners, children and working arrangements

A British passport does not automatically give a non-UK partner the same entry or residence position, and family reunification has its own eligibility and paperwork. Similarly, having a UK employer and working online is not an exemption from Bulgarian immigration rules.

Ask the authority about each family member individually and tell a qualified adviser whether you will work for a Bulgarian employer, a British company or yourself. Professional qualifications may also require recognition.

05 / Practical guidance

What to establish before booking your move

Keep a short decision record: visa category considered, issuing authority, relevant official page, any advice from a qualified professional, and the date you verified it. Rules change and a neighbour's successful application may not reflect your circumstances.

Do not pay an agent for an asserted guaranteed visa outcome. Independently verify the qualifications and scope of any service provider.

Go a little deeper

Choose the right starting route

This table is a research guide, not an eligibility decision. If more than one description fits, ask the Bulgarian authority which position takes precedence.

Visiting on a British passport

Check the 90 days in any rolling 180-day Schengen allowance and the conditions of a visa-free visit. Do not assume those days reset when you cross into Bulgaria from another Schengen country.

Already lawfully resident before 1 January 2021

Check whether you hold Withdrawal Agreement protection and the right Bulgarian residence card. Your position is not the same as a new UK arrival.

Planning to live in Bulgaria long-term

Identify the exact legal basis with Bulgarian authorities. Research Type D visas where appropriate and the separate procedure for the relevant residence permit.

Intending to work or run a business

Verify what employment or self-employment the proposed permission actually allows. A British employer does not automatically exempt work performed in Bulgaria.

The 90/180 rule in practice

The Schengen limit is a rolling window, not an allowance for each country and not a calendar-year total. An example for planning: if you have spent time in France before your Bulgaria trip, those Schengen days may affect the days available for the new visit. The entry and exit days count in the Schengen calculation. Always use your actual travel history when checking allowance.

Which Bulgarian authority handles what?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides visa and consular information, including Type D. The Ministry of the Interior Migration Directorate handles residence permission decisions and renewals. Confirm the actual issuing office and current forms for your situation rather than relying on agencies' promises.

Questions to ask before booking removals

Ask whether you must apply from your country of lawful residence; what evidence you must provide for accommodation, means, health cover and purpose; what needs translating or legalising; whether dependants require separate applications; and what work the status would permit. Request current answers from the relevant authority. Do not purchase non-refundable travel or relocation services on the assumption an application will succeed.

What a Bulgarian permit does not automatically do

Holding Bulgarian residence permission does not give unrestricted residence or employment rights across every other Schengen country. Read the travel rights attached to the specific document and the 90/180 rules for visits elsewhere. Keeping a residence document and passport together may be important when crossing borders.
